Evangelism Update December 16, 2008

Evangelism Memory Verse:

“Whosoever therefore shall confess Me before men, him will I confess also before My Father which is in heaven. But whosoever shall deny Me before men, him will I also deny before My Father which is in heaven.”

–Matthew 10:32, 33

Evangelism Quote:

“If you want the Kingdom speeded, go out and speed it yourselves. Only obedience rationalizes prayer. Only Missions can redeem your intercessions from insincerity.”

–William Carey

Evangelism Report:

Youth Detention Center:

Last Monday I joined Ernie Black and Joe Todd of Countryside Bible Church at a local youth detention center to do a Bible study there with the teens who are incarcerated there. We had about six young men out and they heard an excellent Bible study on Matthew 25:1-13. This drew one of the young men, a new guy, into some serious questioning about his own salvation. It caused him to ask good questions about the issue of counting the cost. He has a close relative who is a devout Christian and the impact of this family member’s life is evident on the life of this young man who does not know Christ. Afterwards, he spoke further with Ernie. Please pray that this young man will come to true faith in Christ.

Extreme Makeover Home Edition (Keller):

On Friday night we (me, Tim, and Samantha) went out to the site of the Extreme Makeover Home Edition project in Keller to see if we could do some witnessing there. There was a small crowd there watching the builders work (mainly the crew that laid the bricks) so Tim passed out tracts and engaged in some one-to-ones. This TV program is one of Samantha’s favorites so she enjoyed being able to see what happens between takes.

We made our way closer to the site and were able to pass some tracts out to some of the brick laying crew. One of the designers who is one of the stars of the show walked by and we were able to give her a tract as well. Tim had a good conversation with a contractor and he even invited us to come back and pass out tracts under his crew’s name, which we were not able to do. Please pray for the folks who do Extreme Makeover. They are doing a wonderful work for those who cannot afford a home, but they are lost. Ty Pennington is a self proclaimed Buddhist and needs to know Christ.

Unity Park (Fort Worth):

This past weekend TLC Ministries was invited to preach the Gospel to the homeless with Agapes Men’s Ministry in Fort Worth. The goal was simply to assist them in the distribution of food, clothing and most importantly, the preaching of The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ! We went down to Unity Park in Ft. Worth at 8:30 am where we met up with their team and set up shop. They had their pickup truck and a trailer filled with coffee, donuts, coats and blankets.

To our surprise, this area was already filled with probably 200 homeless people. When they saw us setting up they came over and formed a big line near the back of the pickup truck. I just walked up from my truck and had the amplifier so I jumped up there and preached the Gospel from the back of the truck. This worked out perfectly. We were able to preach the Gospel to everyone in the park prior to giving them their blankets, coats, coffee and donuts.

After preaching the Gospel, we were able to mingle around the crowd and had many great one-to-ones. Rex George, Ron Martinez, Wayne Owens and Kevin Wills joined us there and had some great conversations and were able to pass out many tracts. This was a humbling experience for me and the team and something I feel is a must for all families to see. We are blessed beyond measure and often times forget how good we have it. I get upset if the internet doesn’t work, the laptop doesn’t boot up quick enough or the cable goes out. How selfish am I? These people are sleeping on cement and not eating for days and I am complaining that the microwave isn’t popping my kettle corn quickly enough. How sad is that? I am not only blessed to have a home with a beautiful family but I am a joint heir with CHRIST!!! I have nothing to complain about and this weekend was a sobering reminder of how good I have it.

Operation Care (Dallas):

At noon we all headed from Fort Worth over to Operation Care at the Dallas Convention Center. This was another great opportunity to minister the Gospel with folks who are in need. There were thousands of people standing in lines waiting to get clothes, gifts, hair cuts and medical treatment. We just showed up and were able to open-air preach and witness to anyone we wanted to! It was a real blessing and we had the privilege of sharing the greatest gift of all with people who don’t have anything.

All in all it was a great day of evangelism outreach. We were able to preach, pass out tracts and witness to many lost souls. I was really blessed to be a part of this and humbled by all that I saw. One thing that stood out the most was the fact that a cup of coffee without the Gospel is just a cup of coffee and a coat or a blanket without the Gospel is just a coat or a blanket. These people need to hear the truth and that is what we did this weekend. We preached the truth, the hard truth and nothing but the truth and God was glorified. These people knew we were different.

There is no point in meeting the needs of people and not sharing the Gospel! If we do that we are no different than any other humanitarian group. Don’t get me wrong, the Red Cross, Salvation Army and Peace Corps are all good programs that do mass humanitarian efforts, but that won’t save souls. We as the Church and body of Christ need to make sure that we are not just doing good things in hopes that people will see Christ in us. They need to hear the truth because faith cometh by hearing the WORD OF GOD.

We need to be a bold witness for Jesus and preach the truth, then follow that up with good works so that they will see the love of Christ and know why we do what we do. This is the right order of outreach. Many people were very receptive to the word of God that was preached on Saturday and were not only blessed with physical food but also spiritual food as well. They received much more then a blanket or a coat and that is the most precious gift of all, the gift of eternal life found only in and through Jesus Christ! Praise the Lord for these opportunities. Merry Christmas.

Evangelism Resources:

1. It’s not too late for Christmas evangelism! Do you send out an annual Christmas card? If so, why not use that opportunity to include a tract and a fun Christmas quiz? Click the image to the left to see the tract from One Million Tracts. And click here to get a great FREE, reproducible Christmas quiz from Living Waters to print and send to your Christmas card list!

2. Here’s a great video testimony from the folks at I’ll Be Honest.com. It’s a very powerful, doctrinally accurate seven minute clip which exalts Christ and demeans man’s righteousness. It’s a great example of what our testimonies ought to sound like.

3. Here’s an interesting video clip on John Harper, a Christian man who led Bible studies on the Titanic and who spent his last minutes sharing Christ with those who perished on that fateful day. It’s a great example for all of us to be literally “faithful unto death.”

4. Here’s an evangelistic sermon that I preached in Australia on The Great White Throne Judgment (Rev. 20:11-15). This was preached at Cornerstone Gospel Church on the Sunday evening I was there as part of an evangelistic series of messages. Unsaved people from the community who are met while the church’s team does street evangelism are invited (along with unsaved friends and family members) and they do actually come out. I hope it blesses you and gives you ideas on how to present the Gospel.

5. Here is a powerful message by John Piper on “Boasting in the Cross”.

We’re also asking everyone to consider fasting for this outreach as well. We won’t presume to tell you when or how to fast, but to do so in accordance with your Biblical understanding of the practice of fasting.

Please plan on coming out to pray even if you are not able to attend the outreach. Your prayer support means so much!

The meetings will be held on the following Saturday mornings at 8:00AM in January at First Baptist Church of Justin in Room 103.
